WRAL, a television station in North Carolina, added a section to their website with the intention of posting a lot of public records including public employee salary information, which quickly led to an outpouring of negative reaction (there are 202 comments on one post) and WRAL’s decision to remove the names of the employees but leave up the salary information.
Speaking purely from a marketing perspective, one way for a mainstream media outlet in a given city to out-compete its mainstream media competitors, at least online, is to be the first to make this kind of information available.
