Open records and hog farms: It must be Monday in the FOIAsphere.

My friend Orv Seymer of the CRG Network sent along an email this morning:

I recently sent a request for records to every member of the Vernon County, Wisconsin Board of Supervisors. I addressed it to their home addresses. I was seeking and e-mails or other written documents dealing with a proposed hog farm.

Within 3 days, I received a call from a member of the board. He went on to explain that that every week, he takes all of his county board documents including his constituent letters out back and burns them in his burning barrel. He seemed to justify this blatant abuse of the Open Records law by saying that he had a permit for the burning barrel.

As they say, you can’t make this stuff up.
