If you live in South Carolina and you’re not wealthy…

You wouldn’t be able to afford the charges involved in obtaining four days of e-mail records from Governor Mark Sanford’s office.

As Tim Kelly learned when he filed a simple request for 4 days on e-mail as part of the ongoing Sunshine Blogger Project, Gov. Sanford’s office wants a hefty amount of cash up front to hand over 4 days of email:

“If you wish for us to proceed with your February 8, 2008, Freedom of Information request as submitted, please remit to this office a check in the amount of $1169.88. Payment must be by cashier’s or certified check, delivered and made payable to the “Office of the Governor.”

There are 91 four-day periods in a year, which presumably means that a year’s worth of e-mail from Sanford’s office would cost $101,738.
