Des Moines Register notes unfortunate conflict

In Bill would fortify sunshine laws in face of growing number of complaints, the Des Moines Register notes that over the last five years, “Complaints and requests for information about Iowa’s open-meetings and open-records laws have nearly doubled in the last five years”. That’s 163 in 2003 versus 304 in 2007.

The state and county prosecutors who ought to go to bat for the stonewalled requestors are often reluctant to do so, the article says, because on other occasions those same prosecutors represent the public officials they’d have to go after.

Update: As if to reinforce the need for Sunshine Week, a commenter on the Register article complains about the headline, saying that the reference to “sunshine laws” was very misleading, causing her to believe the article would be about green stuff, sunshine and fuel emissions.
