Transparency legislation in the works

In Illinois, several organizations have sent a letter off to the state’s senators urging them to vote for HB 4765.

HB 4765 is a tough-minded transparency bill. Among other things, it would require the state of Illinois to post an online database of “all current state employees and individual consultants, sorted separately by name, agency, position title, current pay rate and year-to-date pay” and all current Illinois contracts, in easily searchable formats.

The Sam Adams Alliance, with which I often collaborate because I share close quarters with Eric O’Keefe, is one of the co-signers on the letter urging adoption of the transparency measure.

On the national level, the Sunlight Foundation is sponsoring a new initiative, Public Markup, which allows anyone with a modem to comment on a model federal transparency-in-government bill.
