Cindy Wilson, of Anderson County, South Carolina is this week’s Sunshine Troublemaker of the Week. Wilson is a county councilwoman, which means that–not being an ordinary citizen in the strictly technical sense–she wouldn’t qualify for this prestigious award.
However, Wilson took an important sunshine issue all the way to the South Carolina Supreme Court, where, unfortunately, earlier this week she lost.
In a nutshell, radical agitator Wilson thought she might like to have more details about county spending before the council meetings where spending issues would be voted on.
The South Carolina Supreme Court could not uphold what Wilson wanted under the state’s current laws. A state senator, Kevin Byrant of Anderson, has proposed legislation that would require each county to maintain a searchable register of expenses online.
Sometimes, what comes from these difficult situations is that everyone figures out the law needs to change so ordinary citizens, not to mention elected representatives, can find out what a local government is spending money on.
Good for you, Cindy Wilson. Carry on and if you ever read this blog post, email us for your framed certificate.
